Therapy FAQ

Find answers to common questions about our services, costs, and what to expect.

Getting Started

How do I begin therapy?

Getting started is simple. Visit our Start Here page to fill out a short form and request a callback from one of our therapists. We’ll review your information, match you with a clinician who fits your needs, and reach out to schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation to help you decide if it feels like a good fit.

Can I talk to a therapist for a brief consult before making a decision?

Yes, after we identify a therapist who seems like a good fit, you'll be offered a complimentary 15-minute phone consultation to see if the match feels right for you.

Insurance, Cost & Payment

Do you take insurance?

Some of our clinicians are in-network with Self pay, Aetna, Allegiance, BCBS, Health Montana Kids (HMK), Cigna, First Choice, Montana Medicaid, Mountain Health CO-OP, Optum, Pacific Source, TriCare West Region HNFS, TriWest Healthcare Alliance for individual therapy sessions. At this time, we are not contracted with any other insurance providers. If you have out-of-network benefits, we can offer a superbill that you may submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement.

Can I use my insurance for couples counseling?

Insurance cannot be used for couples therapy when the focus is on the relationship itself rather than on one individual’s mental health treatment. Regardless of whether we are in-network with your insurance, services specifically aimed at relationship counseling are not covered by insurance plans or Medicaid. These programs only reimburse for individual treatment. While sessions labeled as "couples" or "family" therapy may be billable, this is only when one individual is the identified client and others are involved to support that person’s care. Submitting claims for relationship-focused couples therapy may be considered unethical or non-compliant with insurance policies. Currently, major insurance providers, including Medicaid, do not cover therapy where the couple is the client.

How much does therapy cost?

Session rates typically fall between $150 and $200 for a standard 50-minute appointment. If your insurance plan includes out-of-network benefits, you may be eligible for partial reimbursement. We’re happy to provide a superbill, which you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement according to your plan’s out-of-network coverage.

What payment options do you accept?

We want to make paying for your sessions as simple and flexible as possible. You can choose whichever option feels most convenient for you:

  • Online payment: Secure payments can be made through our Square online payment portal (insert your Square link).

  • By mail: Checks can be made payable to Peaks and Valleys Therapy and mailed to:
2423 Mullan Rd, Missoula, MT 59808

  • In person: We accept cash, checks, or credit/debit cards during in-office sessions.

If you pay with cash or check, it helps us save on processing fees, which allows us to keep overall costs down for our clients.

Do you offer sliding scale or financial assistance?

We do not offer a formal sliding scale at this time. However, we’re able to provide a reduced self-pay rate for clients who choose not to submit claims to insurance. This option allows for greater privacy and flexibility in treatment while keeping session costs more accessible.

Can I get reimbursed if you're out-of-network?

Yes, many insurance plans offer out-of-network benefits that may reimburse you for part of your session cost. If your plan includes this option, we can provide you with a superbill—a detailed receipt that you can submit directly to your insurance company.

Reimbursement amounts vary depending on your plan, so it’s a good idea to contact your insurance provider in advance and ask about your out-of-network mental health coverage.

What is nature-based therapy?

Nature-based therapy integrates the natural environment into the healing process. Sessions may take place outdoors or include nature-focused techniques that help calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and support emotional growth. It’s a way of deepening therapy by connecting with the natural world as part of your healing journey.

Can I transition from individual to couples therapy later?

Generally, it’s recommended to work with a therapist who specializes in couples therapy instead of switching from an individual therapist. Additionally, continuing therapy with someone who already has a relationship with one partner can sometimes lead to bias or make the other partner feel uncomfortable or unsafe in the sessions.

About Our Team

Can I come to session in person?

Yes! Therapy tends to be most impactful when done in person. Research in neuroscience highlights the benefits of being physically present with others, especially in a therapeutic setting. We offer in person sessions at three different locations.

How frequently should I meet with a therapist?

How often you meet for therapy depends on your schedule, financial considerations, and personal goals. Weekly or bi-weekly sessions are most common, as longer gaps can slow progress. Many people choose to meet more frequently at the beginning and then reduce the frequency over time. You and your therapist will work together to decide what pace feels most supportive for you.

What happens if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Each therapist at Peaks and Valleys Therapy manages their own scheduling and cancellation policy, which will be reviewed with you during the intake process. If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, please contact your therapist directly by phone or email as soon as possible. Providing advance notice helps ensure that your therapist can offer that time to another client in need.

What happens if I meet my therapist outdoors for nature-based therapy and the weather is bad?

Your therapist will work with you ahead of time to create a plan for handling inclement weather, taking into account several factors. If an outdoor session isn’t possible due to weather, your appointment will be shifted to an indoor setting.
