Getting Started with Couples Counseling

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, is a research-backed approach that has helped thousands of couples strengthen their emotional connection and improve communication. If you're experiencing feelings of distance, frustration, or recurring conflict in your relationship, EFT may be the solution you’ve been looking for.

At the heart of EFT is the belief that a secure emotional bond is the foundation of a healthy and lasting relationship. When couples feel emotionally connected and understood, they're better able to navigate challenges together. EFT helps partners recognize and break free from negative communication patterns that often lead to misunderstanding and tension. Instead, couples learn to communicate in ways that foster trust, empathy, and emotional support.

This approach is particularly effective in helping couples who are stuck in cycles of conflict, such as those involving hurtful arguments, emotional withdrawal, or miscommunication. EFT offers a roadmap for transforming these negative patterns into healthier, more supportive ways of relating to each other.

Couples typically attend between 12-20 sessions, where they will work with a trained EFT therapist in a safe and supportive environment. Over the course of therapy, partners will learn to identify their emotional needs, understand their partner's perspective, and create a deeper, more secure emotional connection. As a result, couples experience improved relationship satisfaction, greater intimacy, and a reduction in conflict.

If you’re ready to strengthen your emotional bond and improve your relationship, EFT offers a proven and compassionate approach to creating lasting change. Reach out today to learn more and start your journey toward a healthier, more fulfilling relationship.

Couples counseling costs $150/session and is paid at the time of session. We do not bill insurance for couples counseling at this time. Sessions are 60 minutes each and can be scheduled weekly, biweekly or monthly to fit your schedule.

At Peaks and Valleys Therapy, we’ve made the decision not to accept insurance for couples counseling to prioritize your privacy, flexibility, and the quality of care you receive. Insurance companies often require therapists to diagnose a specific mental health condition in order to cover the cost of therapy, which can limit the focus of our work together. Couples counseling, especially when using approaches like Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), is not always about a formal diagnosis but rather about strengthening relationships and improving communication. By not using insurance, we are able to offer a more personalized, client-centered experience, ensuring that the therapy remains focused entirely on your needs without external constraints. We believe this approach allows us to provide the best possible care and create lasting change without the limitations that insurance policies might impose.

At Peaks and Valleys Therapy, we are dedicated to helping couples navigate the ups and downs of their relationship with care, compassion, and proven therapeutic approaches. Our experienced therapists specialize in creating a safe and supportive space where couples can openly explore their concerns, improve communication, and rebuild emotional connection. We take a personalized approach to counseling, using evidence-based methods like Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to help partners strengthen their bond and resolve conflict in healthy, constructive ways. Whether you're dealing with long-standing issues or looking to improve your relationship, we are here to support you every step of the way. Choose Peaks and Valleys Therapy for a collaborative and empathetic approach that empowers couples to achieve lasting happiness and harmony in their marriage.

During couples counseling with Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), you can expect a supportive and structured process that focuses on improving emotional connection and communication between you and your partner. In the beginning, your therapist will help you identify negative patterns of interaction, such as withdrawing, criticizing, or escalating conflict, and explore the underlying emotions driving these behaviors. As you work through the process, you'll learn how to express your emotional needs and vulnerabilities in a way that fosters empathy and understanding. The therapist will guide you both through conversations designed to help you reframe your perspective, increase emotional attunement, and create a deeper sense of safety and trust. Over the course of 12-20 sessions, you’ll develop new ways of relating to one another, helping you break old patterns and build a more secure, loving bond. Each session provides tools and strategies to help you communicate more effectively, resolve conflicts constructively, and strengthen your emotional connection for the long term.

Couples counseling might be right for your relationship if you’re noticing ongoing patterns of communication breakdowns, repeated arguments, or emotional distance that you can’t seem to resolve on your own. If you’ve tried to work through issues but keep hitting a wall, or if you find it difficult to connect emotionally with your partner, counseling can offer the support you need to break free from these cycles. Signs that counseling may be beneficial include feelings of disconnection, growing resentment, or a lack of intimacy, whether physical or emotional.

Additionally, if you’re dealing with more serious issues like infidelity, trust issues, or major life changes that are causing tension, couples therapy can provide a safe space to process these challenges together. If you're both willing to invest time and effort into improving your relationship, couples counseling can help you rediscover your connection, heal past wounds, and strengthen your bond for the future.
